The Advaitists try to repackage atheism in a sweet-covered pill called “Advait Vedant” or more recently as “Gurmat Advaitvaad”. Just as their leader Shankaracharya plagiarized from the Buddhists and convinced the converting rulers to ascribe to the Veds, and in doing so brought them back into the fold of Snatan Mat, so do these “Nirmalay” plagiarize and contort Gurbani Panktian to try to justify their devoid-of-a-higher-power philosophy.
Amongst the many Panktian that these individuals incorrectly interpret due to their lack of understanding of Gurbani Viyakaran and Gurmat is the following Pankti:
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ॥੭॥
They will quote this Pankti and claim that it supports their Advait philosophy. They will rely on the Arth of some Arthkars which are as such:
ਜੀਵ ਹੈ ਰਾਮ ਔ ਰਾਮ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਏਹ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਬੀਚਾਰਣੇ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਕੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੋ ਪਾਈਤਾ ਹੈ॥੭॥
This Arth is incorrect because in order for this Arth to be derived, the word ਆਤਮ would have to have an ੁ on the ਮ in both cases. But as you can see there is no ੁ to be found. It is not possible to derive the meaning that they wish to derive because for the Arth to be that the soul (ਆਤਮ) is Vaheguru ji, then just as the word ਰਾਮੁ is a singular masculine noun, the word ਆਤਮ - being a singular masculine noun - would have been written as ਆਤਮੁ unless there is a reason for the ੁ to be dropped. There are multiple reasons why the ੁ would be dropped and we will discuss those shortly and also do the correct Padched and Arth of this Pankti, but before we do that let us look at cases from Gurbani when the word ਆਤਮੁ is being used as a singular masculine noun to refer to the soul.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੪॥
ਆਤਮੁ ਜਿਤਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਗੰਜ ਤਪਾਗਾ ॥
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
In all of these cases you can see that the word ਆਤਮੁ has an ੁ at the end which allows the Arth to be in reference to the soul.
Now let us look at the Pankti that the Advaitists believe supports their viewpoint but in reality actually destroys their narrative when understood correctly.
The correct Padched of the Pankti should be as follows:
ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ॥੭॥
The first ਆਤਮੁ loses its ੁ due to it being a compound word with ਰਾਮੁ. This is basic grammar and this compound word ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ refers to the Jyot Roop Sargun Vaheguru ji in our Hirda, or what is sometimes referred to as “personal Jyot of Vaheguru”. This ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ is not the soul but Vaheguru ji who resides alongside the soul. Here is use of the word in some other Shabads as well:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਦੂਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
So now that the first ਆਤਮ has been accounted for, what about the second ਆਤਮ ? Great question. Let us look at the reasons why a singular masculine noun would lose its ੁ.
One reason it could lose its ੁ would be if it is being used in the plural, but that isn’t the case here. Another reason could be if it is being used as a compound word, as was the case for the first ਆਤਮ, but that wouldn’t make sense here either.
So the only logical reason for the ੁ to be dropped is if there is a preposition that is either present or hidden. Since there is no present preposition in the Pankti, we will have to assume that there is a hidden preposition. In this case, the hidden preposition which makes the most sense is ਵਿਚ. Which means that the second ਆਤਮ that’s free from an ੁ would translate to ਆਤਮ ਵਿਚ, or in the soul.
Here is the Arth of this Pankti put together below:
ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ॥੭॥
(ਜੋ) ਆਤਮਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ, (ਸੋ) ਰਾਮੁ, ਆਤਮ (ਵਿਚ) ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਜਾਪ) ਸੇ ਹਰਿ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ) ਪਾਈਤਾ ਹੈ।
This Arth makes sense according to Gurmat that Sargun Saroopi Jyot Parkashi Vaheguru ji is within the Atma and can be seen by recitation of GurShabad. Mere contemplation or “Gyan” is not enough for Darshan of Vaheguru ji and is even not enough for understanding the soul, either. True Vichaar is to do Jaap of Gurshabad (ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਸਚਾ ਏਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥).
A similar Pankti to the one above is as follows:
ਆਤਮ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
As you can see, the ੁ has been dropped in the correct places as per grammar and the Arth of this Pankti also support the Arth we did earlier. This shows that the pseudo-scholars who are intoxicated by their egoistic self-worship are unaware of what Gurbani is saying and they don’t consider the rest of Gurbani when doing Arth.
The Advaitists bend over backwards to try to prove that the soul is itself God and that there is no separate deity. They are welcome to whatever delusions they want to have but they should stop trying to skew Gurbani Arth to fit their Manmat philosophies.
Would it not need to be ਆਤਮਿ for it to be in the locative case?
Delusions of grandeur are in assertions of higher being merely by repetition of words of realized sants. Advaitin disposition is very good in keeping veils of illusions— based on one's egoistic belief that he knows the unknown—at bay. Seek some humility and delve into bhakti rather than negating profoundness.
